Bear Chair by the pool and hot tub

Splashes, chlorine and humid air put demands on outdoor furniture. We show which Bear Chair variant holds up best by the pool and hot tub.

Bear Chair by the pool

Pool and hot tub areas place particular demands on outdoor furniture: regular splashes, traces of chlorine, high humidity, often blazing sun. Not every Adirondack chair is made for that. At Bear Chair, three variants are particularly suited to pool areas: Western Red Cedar, Royal Composite and the painted pine version. Each has its strengths.

Western Red Cedar by the pool

Cedar wood is naturally resinous and water-repellent. Splashes bead off, and the wood does not swell. Even near a hot tub, where light moisture constantly hangs in the air, cedar copes well.

  • Chlorine splashes do not acutely harm cedar. However, regularly splashing large amounts of chlorine on the wood accelerates greying.
  • Direct contact with the pool floor: simply reposition occasionally; the wood dries quickly.
  • Care stays uncomplicated: a little more brushing, occasionally Bear Chair Cleaner, and that is enough.

Recommended models: Adirondack Bear Chair Original or Royal Bear Chair.

Royal Composite, the first choice for pools

If you want maximum freedom from maintenance by the pool and can do without real wood, choose the Royal Composite Bear Chair. The composite construction combines Bear Chair DNA with low-maintenance recycled plastic. Advantages by the pool:

  • Chlorine and salt water do not bother composite
  • Splashes dry without leaving marks
  • Cleaning with water alone
  • Colour-fast over a very long time, the composite surface keeps its look stable for many years

Composite chairs are, however, considerably heavier than cedar, which by the pool can be an advantage (wind stability) or a disadvantage (less flexible to move).

Adirondack Bear Chair Pine, painted

A third variant for pool areas: the Adirondack Bear Chair Pine in its painted version. Pine takes stains and paint exceptionally well. A professionally applied coat of paint seals the wood and reliably protects it against splashes and traces of chlorine. On request, we professionally paint your pine chair in the colour of your choice; a specialist takes care of it for you.

Advantage over cedar: even better protection against direct splashes thanks to the paint sealing. Advantage over composite: lighter in weight, the warm feel of wood, and a free choice of colour to match your pool design.

What to avoid by the pool

  • Storing seat cushions outdoors: they absorb moisture and go mouldy quickly. Always store them indoors.
  • Parking chairs directly on the pool edge: pool water usually contains chlorine. Avoid the chair legs standing permanently in puddles.
  • Pressure washers for cleaning: neither cedar nor composite likes them. A brush and water are enough.

Hot tub specifics

Hot tubs are often hotter than pools and produce steam. The wood absorbs this steam more slowly than direct splashes, but continuously. Cedar furniture around the hot tub is unproblematic, but should not stand directly under the hot tub cover, where condensation can collect.

Pool set recommendation

  • 2-4 Royal Composite Bear Chairs as main seats (low-maintenance)
  • 1 Bear Chair side table for drinks
  • 1 Bear Chair bench for social gatherings
  • Seat cushions for switching between indoors and out (always store indoors)

On request, we take over the complete assembly of your pool set. For Bear Chairs that we fully assemble for you, we grant a 10-year warranty on wood and workmanship. Delivery within Switzerland usually takes place within 2-3 working days of receipt of payment.

Frequently asked questions about Bear Chair by the pool

Does Western Red Cedar withstand splashes?

Yes. The wood is naturally resinous and water-repellent. Chlorine splashes are unproblematic in normal amounts.

What is better by the pool: cedar or composite?

Composite (Royal Composite) needs less maintenance and is less sensitive to chlorine. Cedar is lighter, more breathable and has the classic look.

Do the chairs turn grey by a chlorinated pool?

Cedar fundamentally greys under UV exposure. Chlorine accelerates this process minimally. Composite does not grey.

Can I place the Bear Chair right by the pool?

Yes, with some distance from the pool edge. For hot tubs: not directly under the cover, because of the condensation trap.

What if chlorine splashes leave marks?

On cedar: wipe with a brush and Bear Chair Cleaner, re-oil if needed. On composite: simply rinse with water.

Do I have to bring pool chairs indoors in winter?

Not necessarily; both variants cope with Swiss winters outdoors. We do recommend sheltered overwintering where possible. If not: cedar with a protective cover, composite even without.
